FAQ

How do I get your snacks?

Buy them from our site! We will then either deliver them by hand or with the help of the lovely USPS.

For local deliveries: if you are along the coast of MA, NH, and ME (or generally in the 'burbs of Boston), we are hand delivering to your area about once a month. Delivery is free on orders over $59. Place your order and we'll reach out via text or email with an expected delivery date. We promise the wait won't be long!

If you are worried about thawing or you may not be home, we ask that you leave a cooler outside. We will gladly place your baked goods there with ice packs that we can provide (and reuse if you leave them out at future deliveries).

Further afield: we are also shipping around the country with USPS. We use environmentally friendly, recyclable insulation and reusable ice packs to keep your muffins and cookies cold. Shipping outside the northeast is in beta so please share any and all feedback.

Your goodies are frozen and it's hot outside. Explain.

Not a question but we hear your concern! For local deliveries: we use coolers and lots of reusable ice packs through the course of driving to ensure that your goods stay frozen when they arrive at your home. If it's warm out and you won't be home, we do recommend leaving a cooler outside with an ice pack and we'll happily put your goodies in there.

If you're extra concerned, just let us know in the delivery instructions or by shooting us an email! We have options to pack with more insulation (see the further afield shipping description above) and want to make things work for you.

What types of snacks do you offer?

Our goal is to offer snacks that are more healthy and nourishing, but just as convenient as, the mass-produced, processed big brands from big box stores. Right now that means we have healthy "cookies" (they are cookies, just not too sweet) and muffins that you or your little ones can eat at any time of the day. We sell everything frozen to retain the freshness of a well-made baked good and to avoid using any preservatives whatsoever.

Are your snacks made with organic ingredients?

We do our best do source organic ingredients when possible. At the moment, our most consistently sourced organic ingredients are wheat, milk, maple syrup, and eggs. (A major caveat though is that, given the avian bird flu situation in the United States, eggs are in general more difficult to source, with local & organic eggs the most tricky, making our supply more inconsistent.)

We are 100% committed to supporting organic wheat production for a huge number of reasons. The main one for your health is that it is pretty impossible to remove glyphosate (common brand name: Roundup) residue from wheat seeds and since we're freshly milling them without any further cleaning, we want to avoid as much pesticide exposure as possible. More about our standards will be available on our website soon.

We are committed to using only unrefined ingredients in our snacks. This means you can enjoy our treats knowing they are made with high-quality ingredients you would find in your kitchen, processed in ways you would process them in your kitchen -- except that we've removed that work for you!

How do I store your snacks to keep them fresh?

To maintain the freshness of our snacks, we recommend long-term storage in your freezer (where they can remain up to four months). You can also put them right in the fridge when you receive them. Any baked goods stored in the fridge should be consumed within 4-5 days.

To thaw, you can either remove from the freezer in the morning and pack for a mid-morning or lunch-time snack (it will have thawed by then) or store in the fridge. If you're at home, we highly recommend toasting the muffins (that makes them deeeelicious). On the go or at home, experiment with what you like and let us know what you think!

Do you offer any gluten-free options?

Sorry, but we don't! While we understand the importance of dietary preferences and restrictions, we're focused on improving access to the heritage varieties of wheat that our ancestors have been growing, milling, and eating for tens of thousands of years.

Don't you know gluten-free is the hip thing to be?

It may be, but if you don't have celiac disease (which is believed to only affect 1-2% of the population) we don't think it's necessary to avoid wheat that has been freshly milled into flour (like ours!).

Believe it or not, there were very little changes to the humble wheat seed (some might say, the original super food ;] ) up until the industrial and green revolutions of the past 150+ years. Before the early 1900s, cases of gluten intolerance (broadly defined) were very rare, particularly considering the bulk of Americans' calories came from gluten and wheat-based products.

As our food system has industrialized, commoditized, and homogenized, a lot has changed: the varieties of wheat we've grown, the way we've processed that wheat, and the foods we've made available on store shelves. At the same time, incidents of diabetes, obesity, heart disease, dietary intolerances, and other chronic diseases have all risen.

We're not here to point fingers or argue for one single path forward. But most scientists are in agreement that a healthy diet consists of a variety of whole foods in minimally processed forms. That's exactly the good stuff we strive to provide you at Unrefined Foods Co, in the most convenient ways that we can.

What about other allergens?

Any allergy or dietary concerns should be made known at the time of ordering. If no allergy or dietary restrictions are disclosed to the Unrefined Foods Company, we disclaim any responsibility and are not liable for any adverse effects resulting from food allergies.

We use wheat, dairy products, and eggs throughout our production process. We do not use nuts, tree nuts, soy, or sesame ingredients. However, we operate out of a shared commercial kitchen space. Please note that because of this, our kitchen is shared with other chefs, and despite thorough sanitization between operators, baked goods are prepared in an area where wheat, soy, sesame, milk, eggs, nuts and tree nuts may have been present. We cannot guarantee a 100% allergen-free environment of ingredients not found in our ingredients list. We cannot claim that cross-contamination does not occur and cannot be held liable for allergic reactions that could occur.
